INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT
Background
As an international field hockey referee, my watch is my best ally. Without it, I wouldn't be able to know where I am in the match, nor I would be able to keep track of other types of times, such as player suspensions.
Problem
Referees have to keep track of 4 different times during a game, taking away precious energy and attention from the match.
Opportunity
Is it possible to design a watch which reduces a referee's workload, giving them back precious energy so they can be more focused on the game?
SETTING THE SCENE
A hockey pitch is slightly smaller than a football field, with a size of 91m x 55m.
Exploring the issue
The types of time to be tracked are shown in the following table. They can change depending on things like age of teams and hockey version (indoor or outdoor).
Referees need to track all of these times without anyone else's support. Currently, they track game time on their watch, but need to make a mental note of the other times - which is very draining.
Ergonomics
How easy is it for referees to operate each button and how easy is it to read the display while operating each button?
Simulating button ease of use. As most watches are worn on the left wrist, button placement is evaluated accordingly.
